About this Opportunity:
Right now, we have an opportunity for a Rail Network Controller to join our Rail Operations Team. The role is fixed term, full-time for the duration of the Crushing Season (Approx. December 2024*). Reporting directly to the Transport Operations Superintendent, this is a unique opportunity to experience and learn the overall Transport Operations Function.
What is a Rail Network Controller, you might ask? They are responsible for the control and supervision of train, locomotive, and traffic movements. They make decisions about when to prioritize and allocate locos and their bins, to our Farmers and the relevant mills, to maintain the safe and efficient running of our 850km of cane rail network. This is a fast-paced job that will require you to problem-solve and make quick decisions if, and when issues arise. When they do, it's important the Rail Network Controller is able to communicate clearly with their team and other contacts to effectively handle any situation.
As a minimum, you will have:
- Possess good problem solving, conceptual and analytical skills.
While not necessary, ideally the successful applicant will have.
- Experience and knowledge of aspects relating to cane rail transport and / or other similar logistics / scheduling-based roles.
- Experience with computer-operated rail scheduling and / or Heavy Operation Separation network applications.

As a Network Rail Controller with Mackay Sugar, we will teach you through our ‘buddy program’; all about the technical and non-technical skills required to work in Operations Control. You will learn to read and understanding the Mackay Sugar Train Safe Working Rules and how to coordinate both harvest and transport operations, with the primary responsibility for directing safe and efficient train movement throughout our extensive rail network.
